Dear Brookhaven Families:
It is with great optimism that we start the 2010-2011 school year. The theme Extreme Learning in Extreme Times fits a year when we are in an extreme financial crisis. Even during drastic budget cuts we have a wonderful, enriching, high-quality, academic year planned. We will continue to have excellent academic programs in each classroom, supported by the PTA with programs like Meet the Masters with art lessons in each classroom, Accelerated Reading, and an outstanding website that keeps our community informed. Fifth and Sixth graders will continue to have the opportunity to participate in band and orchestra. Our students have library and computers weekly, and our sixth graders will be able to attend Outdoor Science Camp with the help of parents and fundraising.
Our supportive PTA also provides family socials, assemblies, transportation for field trips, reading interventions for struggling readers, and conducts all of the fundraising that allows our children to participate in these excellent activities. They are a hard-working team!
As you know, with limited resources we have had to tighten our “belts” and increase class size in primary grades. I would encourage every voting-age person to research the candidates and vote for those who support public education. It is the responsibility of each of us to make our voices heard when we go to the polls this November. One person can make a difference, and an entire community CAN bring about change.
